Walt Disney on October 11, 2006 announced that it intends to set off a chain of retail stores in India for selling its craft, apparel, and branded stationary products in partnership with an Indian company. The Burbank, which is a California based company, has entered in to a franchise deal with RJ Corp, which will establish above hundred retail stores throughout India in the coming five years, as per Rajat Jain, head of Disney India. RJ Corp, a part of N.D. (New Delhi) based Jaipuria Group of companies, will invest US$ 22 Million to set up a chain of 'Disney Artist' retail stores. This partnership comes as part of the efforts of Walt Disney to enhance its presence in India, where growing middle class earnings are spurring demand for Western branded products. This deal will help to expand the scope of the products among the kids led family business leveraging on a brand like Disney, as per the chairman of RJ Corp, Ravi Jaipuria. The group also plans to become the sole licensee to source & market crafts and arts merchandise under the brand name 'Disney Artist' for wholesale in Nepal, India Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Bangladesh. This tie-up of Walt Disney and RJ Corp. is restricted to selling cards, stationary, craft & apparel, however Disney remains still open to further expand the partnership, said Jain.
